| This paper explores the economics of input decision by a firm facing production uncertainty. It relies on a state-contingent approach to production uncertainty. First, the paper develops a methodology to specify and estimate cost-minimizing input decisions under a state-contingent technology. Second, the analysis is applied to time series data on US agriculture. It finds strong empirical evidence that, in the analysis of input choices, expected output alone does not provide an appropriate representation of production uncertainty. | As atividades mecanizadas têm impacto significativo no custo de produção da cultura e o produtor tem várias opções que vai desde realizar todas as operações com máquinas próprias até a completa terceirização, passando pela combinação máquinas próprias – terceirização. Desta forma, este trabalho tem como objetivos, analisar economicamente quatro alternativas para a realização das operações mecanizadas da cultura da cana-de-açúcar. Análise dos resultados permite concluir que para a produção mecanizada da cultura de cana-de-açúcar a alternativa 3 é a mais viável para o produtor nas fases de formação e produção da cultura no campo. | O problema da escassez ou a falta de agua para consumo humano, animal e vegetal, no meio rural, e mais intenso nas regioes aridas e semi-aridas, que correspondem a 55% das terras continentais do planeta e tem uma populacao de 628 milhoes de pessoas. | North Shore City’s coastline has been subject to intensive development pressure over the last 15 years. In this time, new developments have established along previously undeveloped areas of coastline and existing sites have redeveloped with much larger houses. This paper provides a description of the planning controls that currently affect coastal development and an assessment of the effectiveness of these controls. This is followed by an analysis of the role of local government in controlling future development. | Hepatitis B virus infection is an important public-health issue. Chronic patients have a higher risk of death due to complications, which increases health-care expenses in. Cost-effectiveness analysis of entecavir (ETV) versus lamivudine (LVD) for treatment of chronic hepatitis B, in e antigen (AgHBe)-positive and negative patients, based on two phase 3, controlled and randomized studies. A decision analysis model was developed, using the following endpoints: cost per patient with undetectable viral load and cost per quality life year (QALY) gained. | In determining the economic impact of a possible outbreak of the quarantinable wheat disease Karnal Bunt, an examination was made of the detailed components of the costs involved. The costs were classified as: (a) Direct costs (yield and quality losses); (b) Reaction costs (export bans, quality down-grading, seed industry costs); and (c) Control costs (quarantine zones, fungicides, spore destruction). The relative importance of each of these cost components is measured for a hypothetical outbreak of Karnal Bunt in the European Union, as a means of ensuring that the policy responses to such an outbreak are appropriate considering the costs involved. |
